The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the Department of Health and Human Services has identified spirituality as one of the eight key components of overall wellness. Author and researcher Lisa Miller, PhD, is one of the nation’s leading neuroscience researchers about the impact that spirituality can have on our mental wellbeing. Join Prairiewoods for our annual Spirituality in the 21st Century event, which will combine cutting-edge science with direct tools for application for people from all walks of life. According to Dr. Miller’s research, those reporting a moderate or high level of spirituality are 60% less likely to have significant depression, 70% less likely to engage in risky behaviors, and 80% less likely to become addicted to alcohol and drugs. Join Dr. Miller as we delve deeply into spirituality and how it correlates with a healthy brain. Dr. Lisa Miller is a professor of clinical psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is the founder and director of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program in spirituality and psychology. For more than a decade, she has held joint appointments in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical School. Dr. Miller has worked closely with the United States Army, assisting them in educating soldiers about the importance of spiritual fitness. Author of the New York Times best-selling book The Spiritual Child, Dr. Miller released a second evidence-based book based on her research in 2021 called The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life. We’re excited to partner with Trees Forever for a rewarding afternoon of planting trees and helping to beautify our community. Together with Trees Forever and Marion’s Urban Forestry Division, we aim to plant 40 trees along the public right-of-way in the neighborhood.

Event Details:

Date & Time: Thursday, May 22 from 1:00-4:00 PM. Please arrive just before 1:00 PM for a brief introduction and group photo.
Location: 1615 Bellboy Dr., Marion, IA (a residential area—look for volunteers in green shirts!)
Parking: Available on surrounding streets.

Before You Arrive:
Please take a moment to complete the Trees Forever waiver before the event:

What to Bring & Wear:
Trees Forever will provide gloves, shovels, and other planting tools. If you have your own gloves or tools, feel free to bring them along. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear closed-toed shoes for your safety. The event will proceed rain or shine—unless there’s lightning. Weather is look great for this event, but we will watch and send out updates day of, if needed.

Post-Event Networking: We’ll wrap up around 4:00 PM, and you're invited to join us in Uptown Snug in Marion to cool off and connect with fellow volunteers.

Join ImpactCR for an afternoon of hands-on community service with Trees Forever! We’ll be rolling up our sleeves for some meaningful, physical work—digging, planting trees and watering—all to help improve our community. We will be planting in Marion. More details on exact location to come!

What You Need to Know:

Expect physical activity, so dress accordingly (comfortable clothes, closed-toe shoes, gloves if you have them).
Volunteers will be asked to complete a waiver as we get closer to the event.

The Carnival is coming to Lindale Mall! Located on the 1st Ave parking lot. This family fun festival will be setup with rides, games, food wagons, and prizes! Giving a fun experience for the whole family! The Carnival will be at Lindale Mall from May 30th through June 8th. Giving you enough time to experience the amusement!
