Event Description:
The Iowa Ideas symposium for Higher Education is scheduled for March 7 at the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City. Speaker, agenda and registration for this Iowa Ideas symposium series can be found online at www.iowaideas.com Iowa Ideas is a statewide initiative offering symposiums, printed magazines, digital updates and a multiday September conference surrounding issues that continue to impact the economics and people of Iowa. On March 7, symposium attendees will share their perspectives and areas of knowledge related to the issue of Higher Education in the state of Iowa. Participants will be encouraged to review current research and case studies, consider information presented by topical experts, collaborate on possible solutions/ideas and determine resources required to achieve established goals. The results of this day will be step one in a series of discussions and interactions leading up to and through a multiday September conference. Speakers for the March 7 symposium include: • Laura Ingleby, Statistical Research Analyst with Iowa College Aid. Establishing groundwork for a discussion on cost, value, debt and more in today’s higher education landscape. Iowa College Aid works to remove barriers to higher education and administers more than $68 million in state-funded, need-based scholarship, grant and loan forgiveness programs annually. • Christopher Morphew, Professor and Chair of the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership at the University of Iowa. A different vision for funding higher education. As Iowa’s colleges and universities are relying more and more on tuition dollars, Morphew will propose ideas for diversified revenue streams and alternative funding opportunities. Social Event Post-Symposium-Technology Association of Iowa. Members of the Technology Association of Iowa will host their monthly TechBrew event at the Iowa City Brewlab starting at 5pm. This is a casual social event for entrepreneurs, technologists and business leaders with a special March edition in support of Iowa Ideas to encourage post-symposium networking. Hosted by the local Cedar Rapids media company The Gazette, the concept of Iowa Ideas arrived at a time when discussion about the media’s role in how state issues are reviewed, interpreted and communicated were critical. “Iowa Ideas is designed to get past partisan politics,” explains Zack Kucharski, Executive Editor of The Gazette. “It won’t assume that everything we do today is obsolete or broken, because it’s not. It will allow us to examine issues in unique depth- how we got to the current state, pursued to address some of the challenges, and how to scale them to respond to need.” Tickets for March 7 and future symposia can be purchased at www.iowaideas.com.
