Event Description:
The Vietnam conflict produced the most dramatic divisions in American society since the Civil War a hundred years before. These were exacerbated by the cultural tensions that became an entrenched characteristic of the decade of the Sixties. In this presentation Assistant Professor of History Allison McNeese will discuss protests by a variety of people and organizations on a national level—some uniting what might be described as ‘strange bedfellows’—as well as antiwar activism in Iowa. There will be a particular emphasis on reactions to the Vietnam War on college and university campuses, and specific events at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and Grinnell College will be highlighted.
