Event Description:
Coe Assistant Professor of English Audrey Golden will present an engaging narrative entitled "Nadine Gordimer and the Literary Politics of Post-Apartheid South Africa" in a Coe College presentation. The lecture will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15, beginning at 4 p.m. in Kesler Lecture Hall of Hickok Hall. It is free and open to the public.
In this lecture, Golden will discuss topics and answer questions including: How do we heal wounds of apartheid in a free South Africa? Can courtrooms and truth commissions provide all the space that's necessary to enable reconciliation?
Nadine Gordimer's first post-apartheid novel, "The House Gun," centers around a crime of passion and the accused being put on trial. Yet the book is not really about trial. Rather, in the text, the courtroom becomes a dynamic space for Gordimer in which she redefines justice as a process of reconciliation rather than retributions. Such an idea is reflected in the efforts of South African Constitutional Court and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Insisting on a direct engagement with legal practice, Gordimer turns the traditionally static language of the law into a reparative narrative that is always immediate and ongoing.
