Event Description:
Modern war creates scars that aren’t always visible and don’t always heal quickly or ever. In World War I, some combatants suffered a psychological breakdown that was called “shell shock.” By the time of the Vietnam War and, in its aftermath, medical professionals gained a greater understanding of what we now call PTSD—Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The medical-psychological legacy of Vietnam and what it means for recognition and treatment of PTSD will be described.
