Event Description:
In the United States, during war, public opinion matters. It is increasingly difficult for the federal government to wage war in the face of public disapproval, and this dilemma is intensified when this disapproval is being encouraged by antiwar media efforts. During the Vietnam War the US government spent millions on multimedia propaganda to maintain positive public opinion, and for the most part, was successful. However, mounting wartime losses, and an increasingly sophisticated antiwar advertising effort gradually caused the government to lose the war for public opinion before they lost he war on the ground. This presentation will explore both sides of this media struggle, describing both the range of government propaganda efforts and the advertising efforts to discredit the US involvement.
