Event Description:
The flood of 2008 affected more than buildings in Cedar Rapids; it uncovered strengths and challenges in community networks and relationships. Strengthening those relationships – known as “social capital” – can lead to wide-ranging community-wide benefits, allowing progress in government, education, public safety, health and well-being. How well has this community built on the sense of togetherness many felt in the flood’s aftermath? Have we addressed the challenges that were revealed?
Join The Gazette and KCRG-TV9 for Learning Forward: A Community Forum on Social Capital, moderated by KCRG-TV9's Bruce Aune, for a public reflection on what we've learned about ourselves and applying those lessons to build a stronger Cedar Rapids. Panelists will include community representatives along with author Kevin Adler who studied the flood's effects on Cedar Rapidians' sense of community.
Before the forum, from 5-5:45pm in Beems Auditorium at the CR Public Library, Kevin Adler will read from his book, “Natural Disasters as a Catalyst for Social Capital: A Study of the 500-Year Flood in Cedar Rapids, Iowa,” which takes a look at community members’ feelings about the response to and recovery from the Flood of 2008.
