Event Description: The Coe English Department welcomes Michael Morse and Coe’s very own Gordon Mennenga to Coe for an afternoon of poetry and fiction. As part of the Creative Writing Reading Series, the reading will take place on Thursday, April 2 at 4:30 p.m. in the Perrine Gallery of Stewart Memorial Library on the Coe College campus. This event is free and open to the public. Morse joins us from Brooklyn, New York, where he teaches English at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. The recipient of fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo, he has published poems in various journals and is currently on tour in support of his new book of poems, “Void and Compensation,” recently published by Canarium Books. Mennenga is a fiction writer and editor who grew up in Reinbeck, Iowa, and he has taught creative writing, literature and film studies at DePauw University, Oregon State University and Coe College. His fiction has appeared in “The North American Review,” “Northwest Magazine,” “Folio” and other magazines, and he has written for Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and NPR’s “Good Evening.” Mennenga was also the recipient of a Nelson Algren Award for Fiction, and his monologue “Shaky Town” was included in the Riverside Theatre’s 2012 Walking the Wire show. Both will read from new work and participate in a question-and-answer discussion with Assistant Professor of English Nick Twemlow.
