Happy Valentine's Day from all of us at Hands Up Communication! Today, as we celebrate love and connections, we want to share some heartwarming stories from our dedicated interpreters who bridge linguistic gaps and foster understanding among diverse communities. Jeremie Diame's Journey: A Tapestry of Cultures and Love 🌍💕 1. What initially sparked your interest in languages? Growing up in a small country in West Africa with over 20 languages spoken, Jeremie Diame was surrounded by a rich tapestry of linguistic diversity. The national language, Wolof, and the official language, French, were complemented by his specific area's Diola dialect. Inspired by his multilingual uncle, Vincent, who spoke nine languages, Jeremie's curiosity led him to aspire to connect with people from various backgrounds. 2. Can you recall a memorable experience where your language skills made a significant impact? At 22, Jeremie's cousin sought his help to communicate with a French-speaking tourist visiting Casamance, Senegal. Serving as their interpreter for months, Jeremie not only facilitated communication but played a pivotal role in their love story. Two years later, he proudly stood as their best man, and today, the couple resides in France with three children, speaking the language that Jeremie helped them connect through. 3. What role do you think languages play in fostering understanding and unity among diverse communities? Living in America for over 13 years now, Jeremie acknowledges how his multilingual abilities have helped him understand diverse cultures and bridge connections within the community. He emphasizes that languages reveal our shared humanity, highlighting how we are more alike than different. 4. In what ways has being an interpreter enriched your life personally and professionally? Jeremie never anticipated that his childhood languages would pave the way for a rewarding career at Hands Up Communication. As an interpreter, he finds fulfillment in breaking down communication barriers, ensuring that individuals feel understood and included. Beyond that, the role constantly exposes him to new cultures, fostering personal growth, knowledge acquisition, and meaningful connections. On this special day, Hands Up Communication celebrates the power of language to connect hearts and build bridges of understanding. We are grateful for interpreters like Jeremie, whose dedication embodies the spirit of love and unity. Wishing everyone a Happy Valentine's Day filled with the joy of communication and connection! #LanguageOfLove #HandsUpCommunication #valentinesday2024

AI and Interpreting...my thoughts on this topic
Acquisition Entrepreneurship, Investor, CEO, Small Business Owner, Combining proven strategies to promote growth
Lately, there has been a large push to bridge the gap between ASL and AI technology. And many feel the idea of a future where we can click a button for interpreting services is both exciting and scary. Especially because interpreting is more than translating signs or words. It’s about understanding emotions, nuances, and the rich cultural context that communication offers. Are you pro translation technology? Or against it? Benefits of early exposure for deaf children
Acquisition Entrepreneurship, Investor, CEO, Small Business Owner, Combining proven strategies to promote growth
Imagine a world where every child can communicate from day one, regardless of their hearing capability. Ideally, every deaf child would know sign language from infancy. Yet, many only learn to sign later in life. Introducing sign language early is crucial for their social and cognitive growth. Without it, deaf children risk lagging behind their hearing peers. While I'm not an expert, I can share my own experience. Growing up, lip reading was my main way of understanding English. It was imperfect, but in a small class of 10, with a teacher who articulated every word clearly, I got by. But in truth, getting by wasn’t enough. When I got an interpreter who could sign and I began to learn ASL myself, the world opened up. They helped me truly understand the entire conversation, and my scores shot higher than ever before. Imagine how different my education experience would have been if I knew how to sign early on and had an interpreter when I started school. Read more on my blog: https://lnkd.in/exS7aAkt
