A journey fueled by love. As an infant, all odds were against Dalton as he faced life-threatening hardships. He was adopted by his parents and has since thrived with their love and support. The family partnered with ChildServe and found a support system full of hope, joy, love, and endless opportunities for Dalton. Inspired by the big ideas of the children we serve, ChildServe’s innovation hub, The Launch Pad, was created to help foster and harness the creativity and imagination of our team. Projects submitted to The Launch Pad create value, solve a problem, and/or improve our culture and experience for ChildServe kids, families, or employees. We're excited to announce one of the winning ideas this year: Leg Cozies! Over the last two years, team members have been designing and trialing custom-made winter gear for the individuals living in our Inpatient Complex Medical Care program. Through various rounds of trialing and prototypes, the team came up with leg cozies! Individuals who use a wheelchair and/or technology like trachs, vents, or feeding tubes, are oftentimes covered by an adaptive winter cape, rather than a winter coat. These capes don't typically cover their lower body. Adaptive lower-body winter gear is expensive and isn't customized to meet the needs of the individuals we serve. The gear designed by the ChildServe team is affordable, efficient, and can be customized to meet each individual’s needs and design preferences! With help from volunteers, our team was able to get a stock of leg cozies accessible for individuals to use this past winter. Leg cozies come in three different sizes and feature some of our favorite designs like butterflies and aliens! During the last week of April, we celebrated #NationalLaundryAndLinenWeek! From fresh-smelling sheets to fluffy towels, this team is all about embracing the art of laundering with love and care. Thank you for all that you do to keep our Inpatient Complex Medical Care and Pediatric Rehabilitation programs running smoothly! ChildServe’s Speech-Language Pathology program helps children communicate effectively and connect with their world. Our speech therapists have a wide range of expertise to treat special conditions that may impact a child’s developmental areas like talking, understanding, feeding, social skills and decision-making. From practicing articulation to learning how to navigate a new communication device, speech therapy at ChildServe brings out each child’s unique voice. Since 2021, our speech therapy program has grown from serving 2,310 to 2,497 children annually across all ChildServe locations. To help ChildServe reach more families through speech therapy, the organization has received grant support from the Iowa Scottish Rite Masonic Foundation! “Speech therapy at ChildServe allows the children we serve to effectively communicate with their families, friends and those in their community,” said Bailey Gonzales, ChildServe Speech-Language Pathologist. “Early intervention is key when it comes to helping children develop the necessary life skills to successfully do the things they love, like participating in school activities with their peers. Building communication skills helps children advocate for themselves, build confidence and grow relationships – for some children, this starts in speech therapy!” "I have seen first-hand how funding support from Scottish Rite has made an impact for many of the individuals and families we serve," said Justine Jahn, ChildServe – Ames Clinical Manager. "The need for our speech therapy services is continuing to grow. We're grateful when barriers in receiving care can be broken for families, and we're so appreciative of partnering organizations like Scottish Rite who help make this possible." ChildServe was recognized once again for excellence by the highest quality rating program in the world, CARF International. To earn this accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, our services were tested on over 4,000 standards.
